Several witnesses helped chase down and detain a man suspected in the robbery of a university student on North College Avenue.

The 19-year-old student was in the parking area behind her town house in the 100 block of North College Avenue at approximately 2:07 a.m. Jan. 16 when a man allegedly ran up behind her, covered her mouth and pulled her into an open garage, said Newark police spokesman Mark Farrall.

The student tried to call 911, but the man knocked her cell phone away, Farrall said. The man then allegedly grabbed the victim's wallet and fled on foot.

The victim, along with a witness, began chasing the man onto North Street.

Soon, the occupants of a nearby car joined the chase. The driver blocked the man with her vehicle and two passengers jumped out to detain the man until police arrived.

Police identified the suspect as Julio J. Sanchez-Zarate, 33, of Wilmington. Sanchez-Zarate was charged with first-degree robbery and malicious interference with emergency communications, Farrall said. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute in lieu of $25,000 secured bail.

The victim suffered cuts and bruises.
