University senior dies at 23

Stephen Christopher Smisson, a senior at the university, died March 29 at Kent General Hospital in Dover. He was 23.

Raised in Dover, Smisson was a sociology major set to graduate this spring. He completed his associate's degree through the university's Associate in Arts Program in Dover in 2008, university officials said in a statement Thursday.

Smisson was a member of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at the university and the Dover Air Force Base Chapel, according to a memorial Web site dedicated to him.

He enjoyed playing video games and intramural sports. A dedicated sports fan, he enjoyed watching his favorites teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Redskins, play.

Smisson is survived by his parents, Charlie and Carol Smisson of Dover; his brother, Burton T. Smisson, of Raleigh, N.C., and his sister, Cassandra P. Smisson, of Houston, Texas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. April 5 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 South State St., Dover, according to the memorial Web site. Friends may call from 6-8 p.m., Saturday, April 3, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 East Lebanon Rd., Dover. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Family members and friends have been offering their condolences on the memorial Web site's guest book.
