The university has appointed Suzanne Austin interim dean of the College of Education and Public Policy, officials announced Friday.

Austin, who is currently associate provost for academic affairs, will officially take the post April 1 and will serve until a permanent replacement is hired. The university is launching a national search to find the new dean.

"I have had the pleasure of working with Suzanne for several years and she is perfectly suited to lead the College of Education and Public Policy during this critical time," Provost Tom Apple said in a statement. "I have total confidence that she will guide the college forward on the University's Path to Prominence."

Austin is replacing Michael Gamel-McCormick, who resigned earlier this month due to disagreements with Apple about a proposed reorganization of the college. Apple's plan is to move two of the college's four units to the College of Arts and Sciences.

Austin, who joined the faculty as a history professor in 1985, was appointed associate provost for academic affairs in June. Before that, she was an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences.

"I am pleased with the confidence the provost has in my abilities. I look forward to working with the faculty and staff of the college during this transition period," Austin said in a statement.
