A 21-year-old university student was the victim of a robbery on Prospect Avenue in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Cpl. Gerald Bryda of the Newark police said.
The student parked his car on the street and was walking up to his friend’s house at approximately 2:35 a.m. when he noticed he was being followed, Bryda said. He ran to the front porch of his friend’s house, where the unknown suspect came up from behind and demanded money with a sharp object to the victim’s back.
The victim told police he gave up his wallet after he was allegedly struck on the head with a wrench. The suspect then ran with the wallet towards Wilbur Street, Bryda said.
The suspect was described as a white male in his 20’s, approximately 6 feet tall with an average build and some facial hair, wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, tan jacket, blue basketball shorts and white sneakers.
Another armed robbery also occurred earlier Tuesday night between Nathan Hale Court and Ethan Allen Court, in the Cherry Hill Manor neighborhood off of Barksdale Road. The suspect pointed a gun at two teenagers, neither of which are university students, and took money from one victim's pocket.
The suspect is believed to be a male, about 6 feet tall, wearing dark clothing that included a hooded jacket or sweatshirt.
Bryda said police believe the two robberies are unrelated.
