Gov. Jack Markell has lifted travel restrictions for all Delaware roads, effective 8 p.m. tonight, but he is still warning citizens to stay off the roads as crews continue to dig the state out from under the more than 2 feet of snow that fell this weekend.
"While some travel is becoming necessary, many roads are still not safe,” Markell said in a statement. “Please do not put yourself and others at risk by driving needlessly. Our teams are working very hard. Staying off the roads will help them do their jobs more safely and effectively.
Meanwhile, university officials are encouraging students to wait until Monday before returning to campus. Residence halls will be open for check-in tomorrow from 2 to 9 p.m., but officials say students should instead check-in Monday between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m
“The safety of our students, UD families and our community are of primary importance,” executive vice president Scott Douglass said in a statement. “No one should take any undue risks in trying to travel while road conditions are bad.”
The state of emergency Markell declared last night is still in effect. Only the driving restrictions have been lifted.
State police are reporting 50 accidents in Delaware since the beginning of the storm, six of which resulted in injuries. More than 235 vehicles have been abandoned on Delaware roads this weekend.
“What this tells us is that not everyone listened to the Governor’s Executive Order,” Andrea Summers, spokesperson for the Office of Highway Safety, said in a statement.
