This weekend's storm is expected to rival the Dec. 19 storm that dumped 16 inches of snow on Newark.

Updated Feb. 5 to include dates of rescheduled events.

In anticipation of a major winter storm expected to hit the area on Friday and Saturday, university officials have rescheduled Winter Session exams and pushed back the start of Spring Semester by one day.

Exams, originally scheduled for Saturday, will be held Monday, and Spring Semester will begin on Tuesday, rather than Monday.

The missed day of classes will not be made up, said university spokesman John Brennan.

“The extra work will just be absorbed into the rest of the semester,” Brennan said.

Move-in at residence halls remains scheduled for Sunday, but students not able to travel to Newark in time will be allowed to move in between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday.

On Thursday afternoon, officials activated the UD Alert System, alerting students of the changes through phone calls, e-mail and text messages.

The anticipated storm has also forced the postponement of a men’s basketball game against UNC Wilmington and the Chinese New Year celebration at Mitchell Hall, both originally scheduled for Saturday. The game will be played Sunday, and the Chinese New Year celebrations is rescheduled for Feb. 20.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the area, beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. The storm is expected to dump 12 to 18 inches of snow on the state, with some areas receiving up to 2 feet of snow.

Strong winds Friday night could cause blowing snow and make traveling dangerous.

Forecasters say the storm could rival or surpass the Dec. 19 storm that dropped 16 inches of snow on Newark and prompted Gov. Jack Markell to declare a state of emergency.

University officials met today to work on plans for responding to the storm, Brennan said.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated the original date of exams. The exams were to be held Saturday, but have been rescheduled for Monday.
