Newark police have arrested an Elkton, Md. teen for allegedly stealing a university student’s car and selling it on Craigslist.
Craig Cunha, 18, was arrested Tuesday and charged with felony theft and second-degree conspiracy, Lt. Brian Henry of the Newark police said in a statement.
On the morning of Aug. 1, a car was stolen from the University Courtyard Apartments parking lot. The car, a 2003 Toyota Camry belonging to a 21-year-old university student, was left unlocked, with a key in the center console.
Henry said the car was listed on eBay a week later. The investigating officer contacted the eBay seller, who said he bought the car off of Craigslist.
Through a series of computer traces, police found the computer from which the Craigslist posting was made to be located at Cunha’s home in Elkton. They found not only Cunha to be responsible for the theft but also a 17-year-old co-conspirator from Lebanon, Pa.
Cunha told police their plan was only to steal items from cars left unlocked, but they decided to steal the Camry when they found the key left inside. They posted the listing on Craigslist that day and sold the car for $600, Henry said.
Cunha was released on bail, and a warrant was obtained for the arrest of a 17-year-old co-conspirator from Lebanon, Pa. Henry said the 17-year-old is expected to turn himself in this weekend.
The Camry has since been recovered from the Craigslist seller, Henry said.
