A university student spent the night at the closed Chrysler Assembly Plant last week after getting lost walking home from a party, police said.
Lt. Brian Henry of the Newark Police said dispatchers received a call Sept. 11 at 7:32 a.m. when a Wackenhut Security guard found the student walking out of the south doors of the building, located on South College Avenue.
The student had attended a party at Ivy Hall Apartments Thursday night, Henry said, and was separated from her friends. She left to return to her dorm room at Rodney Hall but started out in the wrong direction and followed the train tracks to the plant.
Henry said the student stopped at the plant because she thought it was a train station where she could receive help. A guard on duty received a call from the girl, who was using a phone line inside the plant, but the guard believed the call to be a joke and hung up.
When police arrived the next morning, the student was taken to Student Health Service, where she was found to be in good condition. Henry said owners of the plant will not be taking action against her for trespassing.
The auto plant closed in December and is awaiting auction. The university is speculated to be the primary bidder.
