After more than 4,000 names suggested and months of debate, the trophy for the first regular season football match-up between Delaware and Delaware State has been named the "First State Cup," officials announced today.
The Wilmington News Journal, along with both univeristies had asked fans to suggest names, from which they chose four for students to vote from. The other choices included "Battle for the Saddle,"(a homage to Caesar Rodney's midnight ride), "Battle for the Hatchet," (referring to the Georgetown, Del. tradition of burying a hatchet after elections) and "The Diamond State Cup."
The rivalry, which has been dubbed the "Route 1 Rivalry" after the road that connects Newark and Dover, will kick off Sept. 19 at Delaware Stadium.
