The Delaware men's basketball team led by 7 with 20 seconds left in overtime, but William & Mary mounted an improbable comeback and ended their 11-game losing streak against the Hens.
The Tribe hit three 3-pointers in less than a minute to shock the Hens and eke out a 74-73 win in front of 2,700 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center on Wednesday night.
The Hens trailed for most of the game, but rallied and sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer by junior guard Jawan Carter with 22 seconds left in regulation.
Delaware came out strong in overtime, but late in the extra period, the Tribe shrunk the deficit to 1 with back-to-back 3-pointers.
With 12 seconds left, junior guard Alphonso Dawson went 1-2 on the free-throw line, and then on defense, sophomore center Adam Pegg fell, setting up a game-winning 3-pointer by the Tribe's wide-open guard, David Schneider.
A last-second desperation shot by Carter hit the rim and bounced off.
"It's the small plays that you have to make in tight CAA games and unfortunately we could not close the game out tonight," said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. "We shot the ball well and had some things happen for us, but we just didn't get the job done down the stretch.
With Wednesday night's loss, Delaware falls to 5-10 overall and 1-3 in the CAA. The Hens were coming off a loss at James Madison on Monday and two home victories against Lafayette and Drexel last week.
William & Mary, ranked second in the CAA, improves to 11-3, 3-1. The Tribe had lost to the Hens in 14 of the last 15 matchups and had not won in Newark since 1983.
The Hens will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday.
