Newark Police have arrested four men in connection with the Nov. 30 robbery at the University Courtyard Apartments.
The defendants include Dustin J. Hults, 20, of Newport; Michael A. Ortiz, 20, of Wilmington; Joel M. Ortiz, 21, of Wilmington and Vincent Baiocco, 21, of Wilmington. According to the UD directory, none of the men are students at the university.
The four men were arrested Saturday at their homes, said Lt. Brian Henry of the Newark Police Department. Some of the stolen property was found at Hults’ home in the 100 block of Roosevelt Avenue in Newport.
Police found other stolen property, as well as an Airsoft gun, in Michael Ortiz’s car, which police say was used as the get-away car in the robbery.
Police say the four men broke into an apartment in the 500 building of the complex at approximately 1:20 a.m. Nov. 30 and confronted the six students inside. The men then allegedly bound the students’ hands and covered their mouths with duct tape and stole a safe and other personal items.
Henry said that an investigation showed that the defendants entered the wrong apartment and were actually targeting another apartment where they believed they would find drugs or drug money. The guns believed to be used in the robbery were actually Airsoft or BB guns, Henry said.
The arrests came after police received a tip, Henry said.
The four men were each charged with six counts of first degree robbery,as well as first degree burglary and other weapons charges. All were sent to Young Correctional Facility in lieu of bail.
