For the second time in three weeks, a gunman held up the Dunkin’ Donuts store on Elkton Road, but police are not yet sure if the two incidents are related.
The latest incident occurred at 12:05 a.m. Monday when a man entered the store at 1142 Elkton Road, displayed a gun and demanded money, said Lt. Brian Henry of the Newark Police Department.
Just as in the first incident on Jan. 5, a 55-year-old employee of the store handed over money from the cash register as well as from his wallet. This time, the suspect also took money from the tip jar.
The suspect ran out of the store and was last seen crossing Elkton Road.
The employee was not injured. There were no customers inside during the robbery.
Henry said detectives are investigating whether the two robberies are connected, but the descriptions of the suspect in both cases are too vague.
“There’s no way to tell,” Henry said. “But the actions are similar enough to look at.”
Monday’s robbery involved a handgun, but the Jan. 5 incident involved a short rifle or shotgun.
The suspect in Monday’s robbery is described as 20 to 30 years old and between 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 6 feet tall. He was last seen wearing a mask, a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and black and white sneakers.
Newark Police are asking anyone with information about the robbery to contact Det. Michael Watson at 302-366-7110 ext 133 or Michael.Watson@cj.state.de.us. Information can also be reported anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, where a reward may be available.
