Newark police have recovered more than 250 shoes they think could be connected to the recent rash of shoe burglaries in the area.
A citizen tipped police off to the cache of shoes in and around a creek along Brewster Bridge Road in Elkton, Md, just a few minutes from the Delaware border.
“Somebody who lives in the area saw the duffel bags, thought it was a little weird, and then saw the shoes and it clicked in his mind,” said police spokesman Lt. Brian Henry, who added that the tipster came to police headquarters to report the find. “He walked in here and said ‘You guys might be interested in these shoes.’ ”
On Sunday morning, officers seized three duffel bags full of shoes, as well as shoes that were strewn about the area, to analyze for a possible connection to the burglaries.
Reports of the shoe burglaries surfaced a month ago, when five houses, most of which are occupied by university students, were burglarized between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The burglar took only men’s shoes and photographs of men, leaving behind electronics and other valuables.
After media reports about the initial shoe burglaries, more victims came forward. In all, Henry said, 200 shoes were reported missing.
One of the major incidents reported was a November break-in at the Kappa Sigma fraternity house on Academy Street, in which the burglar took dozens of pairs of shoes, as well as photos and several pairs of men’s boxer shorts.
Henry said because the shoes were found in a creek, they need to be left to dry for several days before detectives can analyze them.
He said there are currently no reports of duffel bags being stolen.
