Newark Police arrested a university student on multiple drug charges after officers raided his off-campus house and found $50,000 worth of marijuana growing in the basement, police spokesman Lt. Mark Farrall said.

On Friday, the Newark Police Department's Special Investigation Unit obtained a search warrant to enter the local residence of Jarrett T. Husid, 22, of Hopewell, N.J. Officers found a small marijuana growing operation in the basement of the home, located in the 200 block of Courtney Street. Farrall said police confiscated potting soil, grow lights and 12 pounds of marijuana.

The house contained a variety of strands of marijuana already packaged for sale and distribution, Farrall said. There were also indications Husid had accepted delivery of marijuana from other sources.

Husid is a senior in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, university records indicate.

He was out of town at the time of the search, but later turned himself in to authorities. He was then arrested and released after posting $32,000 cash bail, Farrall said. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, trafficking marijuana and other related charges.

"Half those in America pay no income tax and vote to make the other half pay for their benefits. Collecting benefits and looking for a job or pretending to look for a job can get pretty boring so why not grow some weed and make some money?"

you realize that the people you refer to who don't pay federal income tax are still paying payroll taxes, like social security and medicare? so they're still paying for their own benefits. also, once you make over 106k, you hit the ceiling on how much in payroll tax you pay so someone making 300k a year can retire early and collect social security while someone with a 50k job foots the bill.

One can't be on both sides of a fence.

1. Half those in America pay no income tax and vote to make the other half pay for their benefits. Collecting benefits and looking for a job or pretending to look for a job can get pretty boring so why not grow some weed and make some money?

2. Ya and while your out changing the pot laws pick me up a six pack. Have you ever tried to get a law changed. Try it its nearly impossible to fight the chemical, liquor, restaurant lobby and the Federal Reserve who look at this no different than if Jarrett had a printing press and was printing 20 dollar bills.

3 Chances are if this is his first offense he will get probation and graduate. It might be tough but he can keep studying and finish his classes this semester or next. The judicial system is as backed up as Main street on a Saturday night. When he gets to court, he should stand up and tell the judge the truth is and let the chips fall were they may. When he gets done he can get a job as a banker since he can grow money out of his basement the same as bankers grow money in their secret vaults.

4. The free market is alive and well. The market demands a product and the government makes a commodity so easy to produce illegal thereby giving a WEED value. If bankers can borrow money from the Federal Reserve at 0% and lend it out at 5% they are making tons of money and its happening all over the country. Jarrett should send his resume to Turbo Tim and turn in his T shirt for a nice suit.

5 All the more reason to turn legit by becoming a banker. Hell, they don't even get their hands dirty.

6. Screw the poor, there are lawyers that need to be paid here and political careers to pursue. Dam the torpedoes full speed ahead. Send him to prison. Bubba needs a new best friend.

1. Tons of people are addicted to illegal drugs-- hence why there are so many on government support that don't even look for jobs. I know a TON within 5 miles of campus.

2. Entrepreneurial or not, laws are laws and if you want them changed then go about doing it.

3. He should claim he was doing it as a project for school or for the dispenseries when they open up here since medical marijuana has passed. For those who said he is DONE as far as life goes, NAH! he can work for a dispensery.

4. Yes, that kind of volume makes me think that he is a trafficker for sure. A true kingpin in the making. But as stated how else do you afford UD's tuition? Perhaps if those that make nearly $800k, have their home paid for, meals paid for, and transportation paid for reduced there salary to a much more reasonable level it'd be easier to be legitimate. Also while you can brew your own beer, you cannot distribute it without a license. The reason why you don't see it making the news as much is because its too expensive to make a large enough volume! Equipment + energy + materials= Lots of money. Growing plants can be cheap and easy!

5. The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources condones learning how to care for and propagate plant materials. However, they do not condone using this knowledge for illegal means.

6. 32k for bail? That's not bad... he had 50k worth of assets in his basement. Who knows how much he accumulated in the past 4 years.... and not pay a dime in taxes on. Sounds like he has the right idea of America, the rich get rich, the poor get screwed.

Dude, whether you're for or against weed legalization, how retarded can you be to continue running this large distribution ring whilst ~1 month away from graduation?

I think I agree with those who said that he's a true entrepreneur. But on the other hand, I find it completely illogical that it continues to be a crime to grow a weed, but it's perfectly normal to brew beer. Illogical laws ftw?

It bothers me that as a student at UD, there are STILL people blinded by government propaganda from over 60 years ago. Let's take a brief look at WHY cannabis is illegal for a second. Despite what many thing, it is NOT the government looking out for the 'best interests' of the people. The first reasons cannabis was made illegal [and technically still is] is all political. From the marihuana tax act in the 1930s, to the War on Drugs, marijuana AND hemp [which makes even less sense of being illegal as it has NO recreational value] have been consistently portrayed as dangerous and harmful to American society. Yet still, we have records of recreational usage from MILLENNIUM ago, and STILL there hasn't been one death directly attributed to pot, yet legal drugs im sure many MJ prohibitionists use or take at least once such as tobacco, alcohol, and prescription drugs, kill hundreds of thousands each year.

And in Jarret's case, if it WEREN'T for pot being illegal, there would be no market nor profit for Jarrett anyway. Obviously, if he had such a large supply, there must have been quite an accompanying demand. Come on people, use your intelligence, do research, think outside the box and question every aspect of cases like this.

This guy pretty much has his life ruined now...for growing plants. It can't get any more ridiculous than this. We need to end prohibition! Had the guy been brewing gallons of beer, he would have been fine; no questions asked. Free Jarrett.

Also, about the 'mature examination' of drug use in the University of Delaware, it is a naive and unobtainable examination. For one, very few people are addicted to illegal drugs. The line and sinker here is what?... ALCOHOL. Yet, alcohol is still legal, in all 50 states

Please, as a member of the 18-24 demographic, using the unemployment rate as an excuse for growing pot in your basement is laughable. I delivered pizza in college to pay the rent. He can get a real job instead of selling drugs.

As a long time family friend of JT, i am very saddened by these events. To see that he must resort to such measures to ensure financial security while at school is something that greatly troubles me. I can only imagine what he must be going through. I hope and pray that JT will be given some form a community service as he truly is someone who does not have bad intentions at heart.

Thanks to Obama/Biden the unemployment rate for 18-24 year olds is around 28%. This guy is simply entrepreneurial. If arrogant overpaid liberal professors and administrators weren't so greedy UD would not be so expensive and Jarrett wouldn't have to grow so much pot to pay his tuition and rent. the high crime rate is because of the ongoing drug war in Wilmington not Newark. Delaware is addicted to big Progressive government telling everyone what they can eat smoke drive etc. I fail to see how growing a weed is such a "big *@#%*&(# deal".

Anyone who is actively growing 12 pounds of pot in a basement is a drug traffiker, plain and simple. This guy's not a student who happens to grow a little pot. He's a drug kingpin who also happens to attend the University, but only because it's his franchise area. (How else could he afford U of D tuition.)

The Review would do well to do a serious, mature examination of the issue of drugs on the campus of the University of Delaware. The hallow immaturity of many students prevents them from seeing just how bad things are in the State of Delaware -- a state that has a crime rate higher than the national average, and a state with more people, per capita, addicted to drugs. This is certainly not a coincidence.

Thank you Joe Biden and his fellow Progressive pukes for giving us the War on Drugs. How free are we if one has to hide growing a weed in a basement? I hope I am chosen for jury duty so I can use my power as a freeman to declare the drug laws involved here unconstitutional and Jarret not guilty. Jury nullification was successful at ending the Progressive Alcohol Prohibition in the 1920's and must be invoked to end Pot Prohibition now. Jarret is not guilty, the drug laws are guilty of violating the Constitution. Free Jarrett Now.
