More than 30 Grounds Services workers and several contractors will work around the clock to dig the campus out from the nearly one foot of snow expected to fall this weekend.
"Our staff is mobilized," said Michael Loftus, assistant director for Facilities. "Our equipment and supplies are prepared."
Crews will concentrate on keeping fire lanes clear, as well as keeping a clear path to Laurel Hall, which houses Student Health Services. Beyond that, they will try to keep other areas at least somewhat clear.
"We keep everything passable, then go back and start widening the areas up," Loftus said.
Employees of Grounds Services, assisted by contractors, will plow roads, paths and parking lots while custodial staff will shovel stairs and smaller walkways.
"We'll work through the night, and we'll work tomorrow," Loftus said.
The snow cleared from parking lots will eventually be put in trucks and dumped off-site.
University Police will be pairing officers for patrols because of a limited supply of vehicles with four-wheel drive, Chief Patrick Ogden stated in an e-mail message.
"Our main mission at this point is to check on the welfare of our students," Ogden said. "We want to ensure that students are not locked outside of their dorms or stranded in disabled vehicles."
