Two university students were struck by a car Wednesday night as they attempted to run across East Cleveland Avenue, police said.

A 2001 Honda Prelude was traveling westbound on East Cleveland Avenue through the intersection of Papermill Road on a green light at approximately 11 p.m. when three pedestrians darted into the roadway. The vehicle struck two of the pedestrians, both university students, according to Newark police. The third pedestrian was not hit.

The students were transported to Christiana Hospital, where the first, a 21-year-old man from Newark, is in critical condition with internal injuries. The other student is a 21-year-old woman from Washington, D.C., and is in stable condition with several broken bones.

The driver, a 24-year-old Wilmington man, was not injured. No charges have been filed as police continue to investigate the incident.

To Serves them right, and To it disgusts me, Anynymous commenters. :
I take it you have not hit one of these kids with your car yet ? I can promise you that if you drive in Newark on a daily
basis, you will with no doubt experience almost hitting or hitting one of these stupid kids with your car!
I take it pretty serious, when I have almost hit a person with my car! People are not to be standing and talking in the middle of the road, or jay walking from all directions, or just simply walking down the road, in the Road !! Newark would make a lot of money just giving tickets to all the kids who are Darting into the streets in front of cars, they
have no respect for their life or the persons who they are darting in front of. I live and work here, and hate the fact that everyday is a possibility I May Hit with my car one of these kids,, I hate it. It serves them right to get hit if they
are darting in front of cars, waking in the middle of the road, jaywalking, hanging out in the middle of the street,
come on , common sense people. Stay out of the Road.....idiots.

We owe the students thanks? for walking in front of our car or truck because they are being stupid ? I do not find
that to be a very smart comment.
I do not ever want to experience hitting a human being, ever, that has got to be the worst experience ever ! These
Kids need to respect the laws and pay attention to the vehicles on the road, Stop crossing the streets without
Looking ! what the heck ? why do you stupid kids do that ??? It is unbelievable what I see everyday here in Newark, these kids Do Not Look, I reapeat Do Not Look before crossing or as this story...Darting out across the street like
idiots that they are! They need to be more responsible., and should be fined for darting into on coming traffic!!

The population of Newark is irrelevant to the incident. These students should not have been jaywalking, plain and simple.

Population-wise, you correct. But remember, there is no local sales tax (as there is in most college towns), there is no property tax paid by students or the University.

According to the 2010 Census, the population of Newark, DE is 31,454. UD students were legally required to fill out the census for Newark. While one can assume some students may have ignored filling out the census, one can also assume non-student residents also ignored the census form.

Based on the numbers available, 20,000 students (16K undergrad, 4K grad) out of 31,000 residents is close to 2/3 of the population. And this number does not include the amount of faculty and staff that live in Newark.

we dont know if they was playing in the streets or not !!! but if they wasnt playing in the streets than they didnt deserve to get hit but if they was playing in the streets than they learned their lesson ''hopefully'' and they got wat they deserve ! but i strongly reccommend to not to jump into conclusions ! have a nice day and soon to be happy holidays !

The students do not make up 2/3 of the population of Newark. There are so many more areas the students are unaware of. This is a very sad story, but before making any accusations, we should wait for a follow-up report from the police.

No one deserves to get hit by a car and put into the hospital. That is a very insensitive comment. People make mistakes. This was theirs and something they will never forget and an action that I am sure will never be repeated by any of them. You are obviously a townie moron that doesn't respect the fact that students make up 2/3 of the population of Newark while school is in session. Without them or the University, your "City of Newark" would not exist the way that it does. You owe the students thanks, not condemnation.

Get a life to seriously post that kind of remark that it serves them right. You have no heart and need to think before posting something like this ever again!

It disgusts me that anyone would ever say it "serves them right" when these two students were seriously hurt. What a horrible, horrible person.

Serves them right. These arrogant students act like they own the street, darting into oncoming traffic, walking as slow as a snail while cars have the green light, and standing in the street in large groups.
