The university has suspended fraternity Sigma Chi through the 2016 spring semester for violating the school's hazing policy last semester.
Adam Cantley, the assistant director of fraternities and sororities, informed members of the Greek life community on Jan. 20 that the organization had been found responsible for violations to the university's code of conduct in an email message obtained by The Review.
"We have been extremely clear about the consequences associated with violating this specific policy," Cantley stated in the email message. "This outcome is consistent with other Greek organizations that have been found responsible for violating our hazing policy."
Cantley stated in an email message to The Review that he would not comment on the specific actions by fraternity brothers that violated the policy, but that the organization had been found responsible for violating the university's code of conduct.
The suspension prevents Sigma Chi brothers from recruiting new members on campus, participating in Greek life functions and using university buildings, services, equipment and resources for fraternity purposes. The fraternity is also banned from co-sponsoring recognized student groups and Greek life activities.
In addition to the university's suspension, the national Sigma Chi organization has revoked the chapter's charter. As a result of both de-listings, the university's website states activities held by Sigma Chi members are considered an illegal activity.
Chapter president Anthony Maiello could not be reached for comment.
Sigma Chi is among multiple Greek organizations who received a four-year suspension during the last five years. Sorority Phi Sigma Sigma was suspended from campus in 2007 for alleged hazing and alcohol violations.
Fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu was sanctioned after a freshman pledge died from alcohol poisoning during the fall semester in 2008. The pledge's family later filed a wrongful death suit against local chapter members and the fraternity's national organization.
Kathryn Goldman, director of the Office of Student Conduct, said the severity of the violations was serious enough to result in a four-year suspension.
Goldman said the department's investigation determined that officials from the national organization and the local chapter's president were unaware of the violations.
She also said the length of the suspension is typical for these types of violations, once the fraternity had been determined to be responsible.
"Clearly, sometimes a four-year suspension isn't always needed," Goldman said. "But we did need to respond this way because the group conducted themselves in a way that's unhealthy for their members."

Sounds bizarre, but these people are stalking people and setting individuals up for stalking and harassment charges. they have these cell phone spoofing devices. It's some kind of game these bored fools are playing now. Too much time, and too many advanced toys. They move from one target to the next. It's all over the internet. Google or Punch in "organized gang stalking, Terror stalking, organized cause stalking, and community based mobbing". It's groups of people harassing other people and setting them up for crimes. They do it over a period of time. Maybe month or even years. These cause stalkers work hand and hand with people in the community. Many of these sites are saying security guards, and neighborhood watch groups are working in these organized cause stalking groups, and community based mobbing groups. These guys are often security guards at college and universities and they have too many of these advanced toys the schools are providing them with. Their are agitating and provoking people for months under the cover of "investigations". It's weird, and sinister. They are getting people phone numbers, hacking into people computers, and simply agitating them. Then setting them up. Then wheeling them into courtroom like that professor you had in late december of 2010 where the public defenders, and prosecutors are throwing them under the bus too... It's crazy, their going after individuals that are vunerable, or isolated so they have very little witnesses...then these groups are all lying about them. They groups select targets like whistleblowers, outsiders to communities, homosexuals, or the outspoken. It's the same thing that happens in elementary schools to children who are bullied and end up in the principals office. Except when you are an adult these victims end up in front of you judge jerome O. herlihy like that sociology professor late last december of 2010. The FBI and ALCU is stating there are about 150,000 cases or victims of this type of crime a year. President obama stated it's an epidemic in the philly area. Cops, security guards, and neighbors working together in order to set people up for crimes of harassment and stalking. Can you imagine that??? Thanks for allowing me to express my freedom of speech through the freepress.
One member alleges misconduct took place and the University finds it necessary to suspend an organization for four years with an outstanding track record without so much as questioning as to if the allegations are even legitimate. Check out the track record through cap records of this fraternity:
Over $25,000 was raised last year for philanthropy by Sigma Chi alone.
Well over 500 hours of community service.
This fall at their Derby Days $7,200 was raised for the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
It is a travesty that the University of Delaware Student Services conducts themselves in the manner that it does. Without any proof just a statement from one student the university made the fraternity defend itself with one member and allowed pledges to testify and attest to the fact that no hazing took place.
The university found sigma chi guilty and has now banned them for four years. Effectively destroying the group and all its positive causes. Technically it is now "illegal" for the group to even meet with each other?
To me it would be okay if this was the policy the University took on all cases. However, when such cases of hazing occur on sports teams which are quite prevalent especially among football players the university sweeps these cases under the rug and gives a simple slap on the wrist.
Then again in this world it is all politics. So what did Sigma Chi really do wrong? The University of Delaware has been on a witch hunt with Greek organizations over the last two years with the removal of Matt Lenno and now Sigma Chi is the third Greek Organization in this time span. Who is next?
