University facilities restored air conditioning to most of the campus buildings affected by the system outage Thursday morning.
Kirkbride, Purnell and Ewing Halls will remain without central air Friday.
Students, faculty and staff on campus endured temperatures in the high 90s Thursday morning after a water main break caused the central air conditioning system in several buildings to stop working properly, university officials said.
Affected buildings include Gore, Hullihen, Kirkbride, Mitchell, Purnell, Smith and Ewing Halls, Sharp Laboratory, the Roselle Center for the Arts, Amy du Pont Music Building and the Conover Apartments on Amstel Avenue. Air conditioning was restored to Morris Library as of noon Thursday.
Classes in the affected buildings may be moved to another location, as officials stated in an email message to the university community that they do not expect central air to be restored in several buildings until a later date. Students will be notified of classroom changes upon arrival at their usual locations.
Employees working in the affected buildings may leave because of the heat but are expected to notify supervisors and receive approval before doing so.
University officials advised those students, faculty and staff who have health issues or who are susceptible to extreme heat to take appropriate precautionary measures.
