Students demand an eventful lineup

Dane Cook is one of the most demanded acts in the country. He's no stranger to the university, but students want him back and now they have the power to get him. Having the ability to decide what bands come to campus was once something only the Student Centers Programming Advisory Board was able to do. Now the choice can be in the hands of the students.
Eventful.com, founded in 2004, is a Web site that allows users to campaign for their favorite performers to come to their town or college. People can log on and create a profile to request an act.
According to the Web site, it works both ways. Performers can also create their own profiles to monitor fans and go where the demand takes them. The site helps performers in planning tours, pre-selling tickets and communicating with fans.
Mike DeRienzo, president of SCPAB, says he sees the site as a resource for his organization to see what students want.
"What I see this being is an additional asset to us to kind of see what is popular," DeRienzo says. "We always try to look at what the campus as a whole might enjoy. It is really hard with music tastes."
He says it would be great to have the artist want to book a show here because of the demand, but when he looked up the university on the site, there wasn't a large response.
According to the Web site, many of the requests were made more than one year ago. Bands like The Dave Matthews Band and Jack Johnson were some of the top demanded.
"I know some of the people that were on there is stuff that we have either had before or considered before," DeRienzo says. "Obviously, some stuff on there is also very unrealistic too, at least at this point in time. I would love to bring Dave Matthews. Everybody always says, 'Why can't we have Dave Matthews?' but there are a lot of things to consider."
Alexander Keen, program coordinator for SCPAB, says the cost of tickets may be something students look over when going to a site like this.
