Vance A. Funk III has been re-elected mayor of Newark after receiving approximately two-thirds of the vote in today's election.
Voter turnout was down this year, according to council members.
The low number of voters could be attributed to the fact that only the mayoral seat was being challenged, Funk said.
"When you don't have any district elections, the turnout is always light. It was actually just what I anticipated," he said.
Funk defeated Thomas Wampler with a vote of 1,364 to 743. Wampler had been a city councilman for 10 years.
Funk said he is excited about the final result and plans to celebrate with 100 of his closest friends this evening. He is ready to continue working with the city and students.
"Citizens agree with what I'm doing," he said. "I am very excited to win again."
