Gunman shoots 18; kills self at Northern Illinois University

Details are still unfolding in a campus shooting at Northern Illinois University.

A gunman opened fire in a Northern Illinois University lecture hall on Thursday afternoon, injuring at least 15 people, authorities said. No victim fatalities have been reported.

The gunman entered a geography class in Cole Hall on the NIU campus and open fired, according to university president John Peters on the Northern Illinois University's Web site. Between 150 and 200 students were in the 600-seat lecture hall when the shooter entered.

Kishwaukee Community Hospital, located in DeKalb, is currently treating at least 13 students, three to four with gunshot wounds to the head.

According to CNN reports, the gunman died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Four victims are in critical condition and eight are listed as stable, the reports stated.

The shooter has been described as a thin, white male dressed in black. It is unclear if he was a student or an outsider.

Reports state that close to 30 shots were fire. The gunman used a shotgun and then a pistol during the attack.

NIU has cancelled classes through Friday and urged people not to come to campus, which has more than 25,000 students enrolled.

DeKalb is located 65 miles west of downtown Chicago.
