Brian Ginn, wide receivers coach for the Blue Hen football team, was suspended Friday after being charged with drunk driving.

University Police stopped Ginn early Friday morning after spotting him driving a university-owned vehicle the wrong way down a one-way street in Newark, officials said.

Ginn, 32, was suspended for two weeks without pay and must attend the university's substance abuse program. He was released and will be arraigned later.

According to policy, employees who consume alcohol while operating university vehicles may lose their privilege to use university vehicles.

Ginn was a quarterback for the Blue Hens from 1996 to 2000 and has coached the team for several years. Last year he served as offensive coordinator, but stepped down after the 2008 season and returned to coaching the wide receivers.

In a statement, head football coach K.C. Keeler praised Ginn but criticized him for making a mistake.

"Brian is a terrific young coach, an exemplary employee, and a great mentor for our players," Keeler said. "This was his first offense, but he made a very poor decision and will pay the consequences. We take this type of situation very seriously for our coaches and players."
